Preparation and standardization of 0.05 M Iodine BP Volumetric Solution

1.  PREPARATION:

Dissolve 20 g of Potassium iodide in the minimum amount of water, add 12.7 g of Iodine, allow to dissolve. Dilute to 1000 ml with water.

2. STANDARDISATION:

To 20 ml of solution add 1 ml of 2 M Acetic acid and 30 ml of water. Titrate with 0.1 M Sodium thiosulphate VS using Starch solution as indicator.

Calculation:

Molarity  = [Actual Molarity of 0.1 M Sodium Thiosulphate x Titration Reading]/20

Limit: 0.05 M ± 5 % (0.0475 M – 0.0525 M)

3. PREPARATION OF INDICATORS / REAGENTS:

a. 0.1 M Sodium thiosulphate:

Preparation and standardization as per respactive procedure.

b. 2 M Acetic acid:

Dilute 11.4 ml of Glacial Acetic acid to 100 ml with water.

4. STORAGE CONDITION:

Store in glass-stoppered bottles, protected from light.
