Preparation and standardisation of 0.1 M Ammonium and Cerium Nitrate EP Volumetric Solution

1.  PREPARATION:

Shake for 2 minutes a solution containing 56 mL of Sulfuric acid & 54.82 g of Ammonium and cerium nitrate, add five successive quantities, each of 100 mL of water, shaking after each addition. Dilute the clear solution to 1000 mL with water.

2. STANDARDISATION:

Dissolve 0.300 g of ferrous ethylenediammoium sulfate RV in 50 mL of sulfuric acid (49g/ L sulfuric acid). Titrate the ammonium and cerium nitrate solution determine the end point potentiometrically. 0.1 mL of ferroin as indicator.

1 mL of 0.1 M ammonium and cerium nitrate is equvelent to 38.21 mg of Fe(C2H10N2) (So4)2, 4H2O.

Calculation :

Molarity = [0.1 x weight of Ferrous ethylenediammoium sulfate  (in g) ]/ [0.03821 x Titration Reading (in mL)]

Limit: 0.1 M ± 5 % (0.0950 M – 0.1050 M)

3. PREPARATION OF INDICATORS / REAGENTS:

Ferroin :

Dissolve 0.7 g of Ferrous sulphate & 1.76 g of Phenanthroline hydrochloride in 70 mL of water & add sufficient water to produce 100 mL.

4. STORAGE CONDITION:

Store in amber glass stoppered bottles. (Protect from light)
