Preparation and standardization of 0.05 M Potassium Iodate EP Volumetric Solution

1.  PREPARATION:

Dissolve 10.70 g of Potassium Iodate in water and dilute to 1000.0 ml with the same solvent.

2. STANDARDISATION:

Dilute 25.0 ml of the Potassium Iodate solution to 100.0 ml with water. To 20.0 ml of this solution add 2 g of Potassium Iodide and 10 ml of dilute Sulphuric acid. Titrate with 0.1 M Sodium Thiosulphate, using 1 ml of Starch solution, added towards the end of the titration as indicator.

Calculation:

Molarity (M) =  [Titration reading (in ml) x Molarity of 0.1 M Sodium x 100 Thiosulphate]/ [20 x 6 x 25]

Limit: 0.05 M ± 5 % (0.0475 M – 0.0525 M)

3. PREPARATION OF INDICATORS / REAGENTS:

a. Dilute Sulphuric acid:

Add 5.5 ml of Sulphuric acid to 60 ml of water, allow to cool and dilute to 100 ml with the same solvent.

b. 0.1 M Sodium Thiosulphate VS:

Preparation and standardisation as per respective procedure.

4. STORAGE CONDITION:

Store in glass stoppered bottles.
