Preparation and standardization of 0.1 N Hydrochloric acid IH Volumetric Solution

1.  PREPARATION:

Dilute 8.5 mL of concentrated Hydrochloric acid with water to produce 1000 mL.

2. STANDARDISATION:

Weigh accurately about 0.15 g of anhydrous Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) previously heated at about 270°C for one hour. Dissolve it in 50 mL of water. Titrate against 0.1 N Hydrochloric acid potentiometrically.

Each 0.005299 g of anhydrous Sodium carbonate is equivalent to 1 mL of 0.1 N Hydrochloric acid.

Calculation:

Normality (N)  = [0.1 x Weight of Na2CO3 (in g)] /[0.005299 x Titration reading (in mL)]

Limit: 0.1 N ± 5 % (0.0950 N – 0.1050 N)

3. STORAGE CONDITION:

Preserve in glass-stoppered bottles.
