Standard Operating Procedure for Disposal of Leftover Samples and Scrap

1.0 Purpose:

To lay down a procedure for Disposal of Leftover Samples and Scrap in Quality Control Department.

2.0 Scope:

The scope of this procedure is applicable for Disposal of all types of Left over Samples (Raw Material, Semi-Finished, Finished Product, in-process Samples and Stability Study) and Scrap in Quality Control Department at [Company Name]

3.0 Responsibility:

QC Personnel: To destroy the samples.

Housekeeping Personnel: Transfer the destroyed materials to EHS Department through Scrap Yard.

Head QC/ Designee:  To Implement and Monitor the procedure.  

4.0 Definitions:

Not applicable

5.0 Procedure:

5.1 Dispose the leftover samples after testing and release.

5.2 Use fresh water for Disposal of liquid material.

5.3 Left over Samples shall be disposed in presence of Supervisor or Section Head.

5.4 The Laboratory should have adequate facilities and accessories to handle the scrap on the work place.

5.5 Follow safety precautions wherever required.

5.6 Preparation of Methylene Blue Indicator Solution. Dissolve 10 mg of Methylene Blue in 5 Liters of fresh tap water.

5.7 Scrap material shall be collected daily in the morning or as and when required.

5.8 Wear Hand gloves and Nose mask during destruction.

5.9 Disposal of Solid Materials:

5.9.1 Raw Material (Solid) and In-process Sample:

  • Raw Material (Solid) and In-process Sample (Blend) shall be emptied out from the bottle, vial or sample bag and shall be disposed into water to form slurry in the Chemical Lab and shall be transferred to EHS department.
  • In case of In-process Samples, tablets / capsules shall be emptied from the sample bag in the big polybag and shall be disposed by pouring the coloured water (Methylene Blue Indicator Solution) in polybag containing tablets / capsules, in such a way that the identity shall not remain as original.
  • Deface the label of bottle, vial or sample bag with the permanent marker pen.
  • Wash the bottle, vial or sample bag with water.
  • Discard washed bottle, vial or sample bag into respective non-Hazardous waste bin.

5.9.2 Blister:

  • Tablets / Capsules shall be de foiled and shall be collected in big polybag.
  • De foiled tablets/ capsules shall be disposed by pouring the coloured water (Methylene Blue Indicator Solution) in polybag containing tablets/ capsules, in such a way that the identity shall not remain as original.
  • Tare the empty carton.
  • Discard empty carton and blister into respective non-Hazardous waste bin.

5.9.3 Bottles:

  • Open the bottle closure and take out the tablets/ capsules in big polybag.
  • Tablets / Capsules shall be disposed by pouring the coloured water (Methylene Blue Indicator Solution) in polybag containing tablets/ capsules, in such a way that the identity shall not remain as original.
  • Deface the label on the bottle with the permanent marker pen.
  • De shape the bottle and discard into the non – Hazardous waste bin

5.9.4 Disposal of Liquid Materials:

  • Open the closure of sampling bottle.
  • Destroy the liquid sample under running tap water.
  • Deface the label on the bottle with the permanent marker pen.
  • Wash the sample bottle with water.
  • Discard the sample bottle in the non-Hazardous waste bin.

5.9.5 Disposal of Packaging Materials:

  • Left over Packaging Materials (Printed Foils and Films) shall be crossed out and are disposed in the separate Non-Hazardous Waste Bin kept in the Chemical Lab.
  • Left over Packaging Materials (Cartons, Catch Covers, Corrugated Boxes, etc.) are torn and disposed in the Non-Hazardous Waste Bin kept in the Chemical Lab.
  • Packaging Materials (Glass Vials, Glass Bottles, Glass Syringe, etc) are disposed in the Waste Bin kept for broken Glassware in the Chemical Lab.
  • Plastic nozzles, Plastic Syringe, Plastic Bottles are de-shaped and bottle Closures / Caps /Rubber Stopper are disposed in the Non – Hazardous Waste Bin kept in the Chemical Lab.
  • Printed labels and leaflets are shredded in the Paper Shredding Machine and transferred to EHS along with other paper scrap.

5.10 Finally the collected material shall be transferred to EHS department through Scrap Yard.

5.11 Disposal of Scrap:

5.11.1 The laboratory scrap shall be removed by trained housekeeping person.

5.11.2 Waste bin shall be used for collecting scrap in the laboratory.

5.11.3 Microbiology scrap shall be disposed as per the respective SOP.

5.11.4 Empty solvent and chemical bottle are collected carefully and the label are crossed and disposed as per respective SOP.

5.11.5 The expired reagents, volumetric solution, mobile phase and sample solution shall be disposed into the sink under running tap water.

5.11.6 Any unwanted papers shall be destroyed by paper shredder machine and should not be thrown in the waste bin.

5.11.7 All laboratory scrap shall be collected in a big polythene bag or container and disposed as per respective.

6.0 Frequency:

All the Tested Left-over Samples and Scrap.
